FHM March 2012: Is it Racist?

The supposed March issue of “FHM,” featuring the fair-skinned Kapuso Star Bella Padilla surrounded by dark-skinned models has got tongues wagging. Sure, it’s the not the first cover in “FHM” history to feature a morena and white models or celebrities in their “uber” photoshop-esque, but that’s not what the controversy is all about.
The photo has been posted on FHM facebook page and right after an hour, critics raised their views. Critics are arguing that the magazine cover plays into racial stereotypes, portraying fair - skinned Bella in pink bikini, stepping out of her shadows, where in, her shadows is portrayed by black models. Some are even going so far as to compare the models to a form of “Stepping onto one’s shadow”...

What do you think of these accusations? Bella said to her Twitter account: My cover is supposed to be about stepping out of MY shadows, inhibitions, fears, etc. And has nothing to do with race. Would you believe that? or do the critics have a point?
Allow me to raise my views on this matter:

“Even if the photo was not intentionally alluding to the "racism" imagery, Summit Media as “expert” on imagery that they are, should have been able to look at that photograph and realize what feelings this type of image would evoke in the public eye. They should have study carefully every images that they will published as far as FHM Core Values is concern: Sexy, funny, useful and relevant.

Why is it, there is no FHM cover being published without controversy? Maybe that’s WHY they did allow it to be viewed on their page prior to actual date of release. After all, talk, rather positive or negative, is talk none-the-less. It calls the curious, the 'ready for a discrimination fight' in public, the I-hate-Photoshop fans, the swimsuit model fans...regardless, its press and anything is acceptable when it’s viewed by the right group. Let it be.
